Kann man Architektur neu denken – nicht als einen Wechsel des Erscheinungsbildes, sondern von den maßgeblichen Parametern des Entstehens und Verhaltens von Gebäuden her, also von Grund auf? Und was wären die Ansatzpunkte dafür, an welchen Vorbildern könnte man sich orientieren?
ARCH+ 188 unternimmt diesen Versuch. Es ist, wie der Titel schon sagt, ein programmatisches Heft, ein Anfang auf dem Weg zu einer Architektur des Performativen. Vorbild ist der integrierte Prozess der Form- und Materialwerdung natürlicher Systeme. Im Zentrum der Forschung und der vorgestellten Fallstudien stehen Materialsysteme, die in Wechselwirkung mit der Umwelt stehen und auf konstruktive, funktionale und performative Anforderungen eingehen können. Materialsysteme werden über Strukturen und die Möglichkeiten ihrer Differenzierung definiert, sie eröffnen für Architekten ein neues entwerferisches Potenzial, da sie auf einer neuen Maßstabsebene zwischen dem Mikromaßstab des Materials und dem Makromaßstab des Gebäudes angesiedelt sind.
Begleitend zur Ausgabe 188 lobt ARCH+ den Wettbewerb “Simple Systems – Complex Capacities” aus. Der Wettbewerb soll für eine breitere Diskussion und eine experimentelle Weiterentwicklung des vorgestellten Konzepts sorgen.
On the Interaction between Material, Structure and Environment”
Is it possible to fundamentally rethink architecture – not as a mere change of appearances, but, instead starting from the relevant parameters that regulate the generation and behaviour of the built environment? What could be the starting point for this and which examples might guide this effort?
ARCH+ 188 undertakes the effort to address these questions. As the title indicates this volume aims to be programmatic, in that it introduces a possible beginning for a performance-oriented architecture. The integral process of formation and materialisation of natural systems serves as a model. Central to this research and the related studies are material systems that interact with a context-specific environment and that respond to structural, functional and performative criteria. These material systems are defined by structure and the possibility of its differentiation, and yield new potential for design by being establishing an intermediary scale between the micro-scale of the material and the macro-scale of the building.
In addition to this themed volume ARCH+ launches the competition “Simple Systems – Complex Capacities” with a total prize money of 12.000 Euro. The aim of the competition is to foster a broader discussion of the introduced concepts, and, moreover, the editors and authors hope for an experimental development of the concepts.
