Factory of the Big Statues – The Global Legacy of North Korea’s Mansudae Art Studio

In 2009 the South Korean company Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering (DSME) delivered the Christophe Colomb, one of the first container ships in the Explorer class, consolidating South Korea’s ­position as a global leader in producing some of the world’s largest cargo ships. The following year, approximately two hundred workers from the state-owned North Korean company Mansudae Art Studio returned from Dakar, Senegal, after delivering Africa’s tallest statue, consolidating North Korea’s position as a global leader in producing some of the world’s largest colossal statues.
