Modern West Africa: Recorded

The period after the Second World War saw many (West) African nations fighting for and gaining their independence from European colonial powers. After more thana century of foreign rule, newly established nation states commissioned public architectural projects to shape national identities and position themselves internationally as economically and culturally autonomous actors. During this time, West African modernism became a new language and an experimental ground that pushed for a postcolonial reinvention of political, cultural, and aesthetic contemporaneity in the region. ¹
