Berlin: A Green City with Growing Pains

The natural wealth of Berlin can rightly be described in superlatives: 490 square kilometers of forests, parks, public and private gardens, and cemeteries—together accounting for more than half of the city-state’s territory; 430,000 street trees; almost one fifth of the city’s territory is designated as nature or landscape conservation areas; and around 23,000 species within the urban area. Protection of this urban nature is a task and an obligation.
