Open Call 2026: Experimental Fellowship – Bauhaus Earth 1

The Open Call for the next Experimental Fellowship, in partnership with Think-and-Make-Tank Bauhaus Earth, is now open.

The Experimental Fellowship is aimed at practitioners who are developing regenerative, circular, and climate-conscious solutions, aiming to contribute to a transformative shift in the building sector. The Fellowship provides financial support, mentorship, technical and methodological guidance, as well as access to an international network of research and industry partners. It supports emerging international practitioners and crossdisciplinary teams with applied research experience.

The focus is on regenerative material practices that advance sustainable architecture. The Experimental Fellowship emphasises scientific, rigorous material investigation and its application potential in construction. Working alongside research and industry partners, the Fellows are supported in developing and testing building products and construction assemblies using regenerative materials and low-carbon solutions from regional, natural sources, as well as reusable by-products from construction, industry, and consumer waste. Combining traditional knowledge with contemporary techniques, the Fellowship advances circular building approaches that can be integrated into existing value chains and construction processes.

The Experimental Fellowship in partnership with Bauhaus Earth combines Experimental Foundation’s practice-based, systemic architectural approach and international network with Bauhaus Earth’s material expertise, methodological guidance, research support and access to workshop facilities. Through Bauhaus Earth’s global ecosystem of demonstrators and transformation labs, research is translated into practice across diverse geographical and cultural contexts. The Fellows are supported in transforming their research into actionable solutions that demonstrate the potential of new design and material processes, contributing to wider systemic change in the built environment.

Experimental Fellowship project proposals are welcome across a range of typologies and scales. The Fellowship supports two Fellows worldwide. Support is provided over a period of nine to twelve months, aligned with project status, feasibility and demonstrated need. The Experimental Fellowship includes financial support covering a monthly stipend plus project-related expenses and production costs of up to €30,000.

The Experimental Foundation is a non-profit organisation founded by architect Prof. Regine Leibinger. Since 2022, the Foundation has promoted sustainable architectural projects and practices that contribute to a transformative shift in the building sector. Based in Berlin and active internationally, its work supports emerging architects in developing, testing and implementing experimental approaches at the intersection of research, design and building practice.

Bauhaus Earth is an interdisciplinary and international Think-and- Make-Tank, based in Berlin. The non-profit organisation is dedicated to the regenerative transformation of the built environment. Founded in 2019 by climate scientist Hans Joachim Schellnhuber, today, Bauhaus Earth brings together experts from the fields of science, architecture and planning, governance, industry and crafts.

Originally launched in 2022, the Experimental Fellowship programme in partnership with Bauhaus Earth awarded its first Fellowship to the London-based practice Material Cultures. Since then, it has supported seven Fellows. The current Fellowship is situated in Vietnam and led by Ha Nguyen of arb architects and US-based Hojung Kim.

The Experimental Foundation is expanding its Fellowship through additional partnerships: since 2025 with the Harvard Graduate School of Design (GSD), and most recently with the material-data platform revalu.

We are accepting applications for the Experimental Fellowship with Bauhaus Earth from 9 April to 4 May 2026, 11:59pm CEST. The jury selection will take place in June, and the new Fellows will be announced in July.

Applications must be submitted in English using the Application Form.
