gta 50: Conference, Debate, Roundtables, Exhibition

The fiftieth anniversary of the gta Institute at ETH Zurich is an occasion to simultaneously undertake a review of the past and an outlook on the future.

The recent issue of ARCH+ Am Ende: Architektur / In The End: Architecture is indebted to two people who have shaped two important institutions, and have thereby shaped architectural discourse of the past decades: Dietmar Steiner, director of the Architekturzentrum Wien (Az W) from 1993 to 2016, and Nikolaus Kuhnert, editor and co-publisher of ARCH+ for the past 45 years. Both of these men conduct architectural politics from a deep conviction that architecture is a political medium.

ARCH+ was founded in 1967 at the University of Stuttgart. Our first issue was published in 1968. In this turbulent era, ARCH+ stood for a different understanding of architecture and urban planning. With the student movement as a background, our understanding of architecture was shaped by the attempt to establish a rational basis for planning and social action. We sought a social architecture for a different society. In 2017–18, ARCH+ will celebrate its 50th anniversary, and same does gta at ETH Zurich:

On 1 January 1967 the Institute for the History and Theory of Architecture (gta) began its work within the then department of architecture at ETH Zurich. Founded as a research facility, the gta – as it is now known worldwide – advanced to become one of the most renowned educational institutions at the coalescence between the theory and practice and the past and the present of architecture.

On 28 and 29 September 2017 the gta has put together a conference, a round-table discussion and the launch of an exhibition, all of them fully reflecting the spirit of history and the present-day, theory and praxis – the four very cornerstones of the institute that have constituted the complementary yet simultaneously antagonistic referential frameworks for the gta’s work since 1967.

Opening Program
Thursday and Friday, 28 – 29 September 2017

Conference “Founding Myths”
28 September 2017, 10 am – 4.30 pm
HIL E 4, ETH Zurich, Hönggerberg

Debate “End of Theory?”
28 September 2017, 6.30 pm
HIL E 4, ETH Zurich, Hönggerberg

Peter Eisenman, Kurt W. Forster, Jacques Herzog
Introduction by Philip Ursprung

Following the conference, on the evening of 28 September Peter Eisenman, Kurt W. Forster and Jacques Herzog will discuss whether the theory of architecture has arrived at an end. Whereas Eisenman and Forster belonged to the proponents of a close dovetailing of theory and praxis in the 1970s and 1980s, Jacques Herzog represents the absorption of theory in the works of a star architect at the turn of the millennium.

Round-Table Discussion “Perspectives”
29 September 2017, 8.30 am – 6.30 pm
Semperaula, ETH Zurich, Zentrum

Architecture, more than any other area of knowledge, requires the idea of a beginning. The topic of the founding myth— that of the gta Institute and the ETH’s school of architecture too—is therefore the common denominator for a series of contributions by international researchers. Whilst the proceedings on 28 September are dedicated to the fundamentals of the discipline, on 29 September a large roundtable discussion pursues the current situation and the future of the history and theory of architecture as an academic discipline.

Exhibition “Phantom Theory”
29 September – 20 December 2017
Opening / Eröffnung 28 September 2017, 5.30 pm
gta exhibitions, HIL, ETH Zurich, Hönggerberg

Introduction by / Einführung von Sylvia Claus

Using projects, manuscripts, lecture drafts, models, exhibition concepts and images from the gta Archives, the exhibition presents the rich spectrum of questions and differing narrations with which the institute has been preoccupied over the course of half a century and that have productively shaped architectural praxis.

The aspect that connects all of the researchers at the institute during this era and beyond is the constantly renewed aim to extract models from history as propositions for contemporary architecture. Nevertheless, what in historical retrospect appears to possess coherence often eludes ascertainment in everyday praxis. Seen from this perspective, theory is comparable to a ghost unable to find its last resting place.
