SToA Stuttgart Talks: Facing Covid-19 – (Politics of) Elements of Architecture

An online live event with Marianna Charitonidou and Andrea Bagnato, Wednesday, 20 May 2020, 7:00 PM CET

Hosted by Stephan Trüby and Philipp Krüpe

The vast shift to global lockdown as a reaction to the Covid-19 pandemic has caused issues which are in many ways related to space and architecture. We will talk about the manifold aspects of the affected architectural elements and the underlying politics with our guests Marianna Charitonidou and Andrea Bagnato. Furthermore, the ascending authoritarian spatial orchestration of public space and their implications in the light of IgmA’s ongoing research project ‘Right-Wing Spaces’ shall be discussed.

Dr. Ir Marianna Charitonidou is investigating the architectural element of the balcony. The project is being conducted at the Institute for the History and Theory of Architecture (GTA, Prof. Tom Avermaete, ETH Zürich) and is a continuation of Rem Koolhaas’ project ‚The Elements of Architecture’ (Biennale 2014).

Andrea Bagnato, architect and book editor, will share both historical and current observations on the spatial implications of infectious diseases. In particular, Andrea Bagnato will present his research on the politics of Italian Fascist architecture in relation to health.
