In the original house—oikos, as the Greeks called it— production and reproduction were grouped together. While oikos, the root of the word economy, referred to the house as well as the paterfamilias, his family, the slaves, and all activities and property of the household, the other Greek term for house, domos, was also used as a verb. It described the tutelage of the spouse, the education of the slaves, the discipline of the children, and even the physical training of the body. Mark Cousins sees therein a clear description of the nature of domestication: domos is a place of mastery, and it is therefore likely that the complementary term “home” came into existence.

Thus, from the outset, the house has had a twofold character: as the basic unit of the economy and as a locus of identity; as a household and as a home. According to Heidegger, dwelling is our being-inthe-world; it generates the innermost, the intimate, both spatially and mentally: “The way in which you are and I am, the manner in which we humans are on the earth, is Buan, dwelling. To be a human being means to be on the earth as a mortal. It means to dwell.” The United Nations derives its stipulation for a right to adequate housing from this fundamental distinction: “Housing is the basis of stability and security for an individual or family. The center of our social, emotional and sometimes economic lives, a home should be a sanctuary; a place to live in peace, security and dignity. Increasingly viewed as a commodity, housing is most importantly a human right.”
